Traumatic Injuries of the Liver (43 cases)

Abstract
This is the report of clinical analysis and evaluation of the 43 cases of liver injuries experienced at surgical department of Severance Hospital during past 10 years from 1964 to 1973.
The non-penetrating injuries of the liver were 32 cases and the penetrating injuries were 11 cases. The common causes of blunt trauma were traffic accident, fall and violence in order of frequency. The injuries of right lobe were 30 cases, left were 10 cases and combined, injuries were 4 cases. The associated injuries were-32 cases and it¢¥s common organs were thorax, fracture of long bone, stomach and diaphragm in order of frequency;
Most of the cases were treated by combination- of simple sutures, debidment, sutures with application of Gelfoam and drainage. Wedge resection of injured liver was carried out on 4-cases. The major complications were infection (14), pulmonary complications (7) and posoperative bleeding (5).
Four cases were died, 3 in blunt injury and 1 in penetrating injury.
